I mentioned recently that I have become inspired by masculine looks. That's not all that has caught my attention lately. I have been a fan of Helmut Lang and Alexander Wang for a while because I love their not overly feminine, drapey (Helmut), and kind of tough (Wang) vibe. I recently found a new blog that I've been checking out daily -
Vilde Kaniner. She is really into several other designers that are now on my radar - who have a hard edge, structured, creative approach to design like Ann Demeulemeester, Rick Owens, Damir Doma and occasionally Maison Martin Margiela and Gareth Pugh. A couple of issues though - these designers are very expensive, and often create some really wacky stuff. So my plan is to hunt down the super bargains on sites like
The Outnet and
Yoox, and check often at the few second hand Canadian designer sites I know of like
Haute Classics and
Fashionably Yours. I did a tour of some of the sales for these designers and came up with some mostly reasonably priced stuff I'd for sure consider buying if I wasn't about to head to Mexico....
Belgian designer Ann Demeulemeester is the original modern rough-luxury designer with her rock aesthetic and experimental way with cut and shape, it’s little surprise that her perennial muse is cooler-than-thou Patti Smith.
Rick Owens made a name for himself in LA where he first launched his own label. In 2003 he moved to Paris where he now designs collections often labelled as glamour-meets-grunge. For the most part, his clothes are edgy but functional with asymmetric shapes, structural lines and slouchy jersey/knitwear.
Inspired by nature and art, Damir Doma’s collections have an ethereal quality, with the use of light and airy fabrics, draping and layering techniques.
Gareth Pugh is 6 years younger than me, 49% of his company is owned by Rick Owens, and he is finally making more wearable pieces.
I had to add a couple pieces from Helmut Lang that I came across and fell in love with...
And OMG check out this bag!!!!
